How to Remove Fake 1-Star Reviews from Google Maps

May 2, 2026 · 8 min read

A single fake negative review can cost an Indian business owner thousands of rupees every month. If a competitor or an angry troll has left a dishonest 1-star rating on your Google Business Profile, here is exactly what you can do about it.

Step 1: Identify if the review is genuinely fake

Before you report a review, make sure it is actually fake. Google flags reviewers who file too many false reports. Look for these signs that a review is not legitimate:

  • The reviewer profile has fewer than 3 total reviews
  • The review is generic, with no specific details about your business
  • Multiple 1-star reviews appear on the same day from different accounts
  • The reviewer's name does not appear in your customer records

Step 2: Flag the review directly from Google Maps

The simplest method is to flag the review directly from Google Maps. Open your Google Business Profile, navigate to the review section, click the three-dot menu next to the offending review, and select "Report review." Select the most appropriate reason from the list (spam, conflict of interest, off-topic).

Step 3: Respond publicly while waiting

Google can take 3-14 days to remove a flagged review. In the meantime, respond publicly and professionally. A calm, factual response actually improves your reputation in the eyes of other customers who are reading. Example response: "We have no record of a visit matching this description. Please contact us directly at [your number] so we can investigate and resolve this."

Step 4: Escalate to Google Support

If flagging does not work, escalate by going to the Google Business Profile Help Community or using the chat support available through your Business Profile dashboard. Provide clear evidence: screenshots, timestamps, and proof that the person never visited your business.

The Best Long-Term Strategy: Outnumber Fake Reviews

The most effective defence against fake reviews is having so many real 5-star reviews that a few fake ones cannot hurt your overall rating. A business with 300 reviews and a 4.7 rating is unaffected by a handful of fake 1-stars. A business with 12 reviews is devastated.

Stop worrying about bad reviews.

YanTrack privately intercepts unhappy customers before they post publicly. You resolve the issue. They never post the 1-star.
